Newborn Care Q & A

What is newborn care?

Newborn visits ensure that your infant is growing and developing well. It also gives us a chance to answer any questions that you may have.

We use the AAP standard schedule for well-child visits:

  • Newborn visit (within 1-2 days of leaving the hospital)
  • One month
  • Two months
  • Four months
  • Six months
  • Nine months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months

Once your child reaches the age of three, visits usually occur annually.

Why is newborn care important?

Babies go through a multitude of developmental changes in the first few months of life. They are also very small and vulnerable. Newborn care is an opportunity for your pediatrician to check for signs of developmental or health problems so that they can be treated early.

Why is newborn care important?

Babies go through a multitude of developmental changes in the first few months of life. They are also very small and vulnerable. Newborn care is an opportunity for your pediatrician to check for signs of developmental or health problems so that they can be treated early.

Many common health issues are treatable in the earliest possible stages, which can improve the odds of a favorable outcome. Your baby also needs numerous vaccinations during the first few months of life, and newborn care visits are the setting where those shots are administered.

Newborn care visits are also an opportunity for you to ask your pediatrician any questions you have or express concerns. Wondering how long your baby should be sleeping in one stretch? Concerned your infant isn’t getting enough breastmilk? Your newborn care visits are the setting to find answers.

What happens during newborn care visits?

Each visit at Advanced Pediatrics of Rockland begins with a discussion. Be prepared to answer questions about your little one’s eating and sleeping habits and more. Breastfeeding support is always available, and the practice also offers guidance on holistic mother/baby interaction.

Next, your doctor performs a physical exam. Information about your baby’s length, weight, and vital signs are gathered and added to their medical record. They compare this data against information collected from thousands of children who share your baby’s age and sex. This allows them to determine where your baby falls on the developmental chart.

If needed, your baby receives vaccines during these early visits. No one enjoys getting shots, regardless of age. The providers are skilled at delivering these injections swiftly and safely, and your baby will be happy again in no time.
